We celebrate caravanning as an eco way to holiday – and a sustainable alternative to glamping!

2012 is a year to celebrate the UK; and the combined excitement of the Olympics as well as the increased awareness of environmental responsibility and economic pressure, has seen ‘staycations’ rise in the last year. In 2011, Wales enjoyed a 11.9% rise in domestic overnight visits on the previous year; England enjoyed a 9% rise and Scotland an 8% bump.

Whilst some of these percentage increases were also thanks to the rise in popularity of newer movements like ‘glamping’, the frequency of caravan holidays and caravans for sale, through holiday parks such as Park Resorts, also demonstrates that caravanning is being embraced by UK holidaymakers.

Caravanning – both driving a standard touring caravan, or visiting a caravan park, like Joanne O’Connor of the Guardian – is an excellent way of holidaying responsibly with family. It is also an introduction to responsible tourism and often border (or are situated on) national parks and conserved land, meaning that you can be assured that the area is being looked after responsibly.

For families looking to cut out any emissions issues related to driving with a caravan, but who do not want to take young children camping, then visiting a caravan park is the answer – especially if you are coming from the London area, whose added restrictions to the Low Emission Zone will affect some larger touring caravans and HGVs.

Visiting a caravan park both sustains the local economy, feeding money back into the area, and reduces your food miles. What is more, it creates a sustainable economic loop: low prices entice regular return visitors who, in turn, do not have to worry about the cost, upkeep, storage and emissions of a self-owned caravan.

Large holiday parks such as that visited by Joanne O’Connor, on offer through Park Resorts, also prioritise convenience and sustainability onsite: entertainment, beaches, kids clubs and caravans are all within easy walking distance.

Choosing a well-located caravan park will also allow you to minimize your food miles and support farmers and agriculture … Read More

Choosing a well-located caravan park will also allow you to minimize your food miles and support farmers and agriculture in the area. Most caravan parks will have a well-stocked local shop; and, better yet, travelers in locations such as Pembrokeshire and Devon can incorporate a shopping trip with a coastal walk – popping into the myriad farm shops and organic spots that dot the coast.

Despite the distinctions we have drawn between caravanning and the fashionable tweeness that often affects of glamping, it’s not to say that caravanning can’t give glamping a run for its money in the design stakes. Families who don’t want to camp and do not own a toruing caravan – but have small children – can get great deals when looking off the beaten track. Boutique, small-scale caravan sites such as Lovelane Caravans on Roskilly’s Organic Farm in Cornwall combine wood-burning fires and eco-friendly interiors with a wild location right on protected coastline – and local organic food at your fingertips.

Nature has enough power to cower even the most ardent adrenaline junkie. Dedicated thrill seekers have spent decades devising ever-more ingenious ways to harness naturally occurring energy forms. Whether it’s riding the ocean’s waves or succumbing to the force of gravity, many extreme sports are environmentally sound as well as being spiritually stimulating.

Coasteering

The term ‘coasteering’ was first coined by the authors of ‘Sea Cliff Climbing’ in 1973. It describes the practice of moving along the intertidal zone of rocky coastlines using a combination of swimming, climbing, jumping or diving. The nature of the activity requires that coasteers wear a full wetsuit, buoyancy aid, helmet and suitable footwear. The UK has some of the world’s best places for coasteering experiences, such as Pembrokeshire in Wales, Cornwall, Dorset, Anglesey and the Scottish Highlands.

Scuba diving

Scuba diving is a uniquely relaxing way to interact with the natural marine environment. The UK has a wide variety of diving opportunities that can involve exploring wrecks, quarries, lakes, rivers or caves. Learning is relatively easy and many places offer taster sessions. Once qualified, the possibilities are endless.

For the best wreck diving, head for Scapa Flow in the Orkney Islands, which is home to a scuttled German fleet of WWII era ships. For wildlife, head for the Farne Islands off the Northumbrian coast where playful seals will join in with the dive.

Surfing

The earliest proven instance of surfing in the UK comes from a letter describing two Hawaiian princes and their English guardian riding waves off the coast of East Yorkshire in 1890. Nowadays, surfing is hugely popular – and understandably so. The equipment is relatively cheap and beginners can find their feet in just a few hours.

The UK has hundreds of great breaks, some more suited to novices than others. Some of the best all-rounders include Watergate Bay in Cornwall, Saltburn in Cleveland, Pease Bay in Scotland, Llangennith and Porth Neigwl in Wales, Sennen Cove in Cornwall, and Bantham and Bigbury in Devon.

Bungee jumping

Nevertheless, the sport caught on, with millions of people making jumps every year. Opportunities for bridge jumps include destinations such as the Pass of Killiecrankie in Scotland and the Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough.

For us who have ever been in New York or stay there for a while then we definitely know that there are numerous transportation options there, but there are times when getting one can be quite hard. There are two mainly used transportation types in New York, subway and taxi. The subway is comfortable, but we are bound to its schedule and we might need to take taxi to our destination. On the other side, we cannot count on taxi in New York all the times, moreover in the hectic hours. Therefore, if we are looking for easiness in transportation in New York, make sure to rent a car. With the car, we will get freedom to explore New York and arrive at our destination on time.

The New York low car rental agencies are having some different rules when compared to other states. Therefore, make sure to learn the rules of the agencies before renting any car. One of the most important things is the rules on additional fees. Here are some things that will affect the additional fees: the type and size of the car, drop off charges, New York tax, location, day and season, additional drivers and some others. The rate rules are differentiated to three types: per mile charge, unlimited and fee mileage offer rate. Make sure to learn a lot about the fees and adjust it with our need and budget.

New York is also having specific rules on insurance. The agency is not allowed to hold the customers’ liable for higher than $100,000 damage or loss if the car is rent for 30 days or less. The agency is not allowed to ask more than the actual damage cost to the customer if the repair cost is under $100. Renting car in New York is so easy. To make everything simple, we can directly rent a car from John F. Kennedy International Airport, so we know that our car is waiting right after we arrive. Visit JFKAirport.net for the car rental.… Read More

Thick walls and even a moat provide this castle with an impressive defence system.
Since Bodrum is a sailing community, a great place to spend the day would be the Museum of Underwater Archaeology. This museum is dedicated to maritime archaeology and houses artefacts and collections from shipwrecks dating back hundreds of years. Documenting the rich and treacherous maritime history of the area and the people who set sail from its shores, the museum allows visitors to peek into a lesser known part of Bodrum’s past.
With its modern feel and cookie-cutter houses, Bodrum is an exciting place to spend a holiday. Sandy beaches, great sailing, and other activities make this location an incredible hot spot. With its incredible history, friendly people, and Turkish hospitality, Bodrum is a great place to spend your next holiday.… Read More
