Is there anything more personal about traveling than packing?

Depending on whether you are going on a luxury vacation or a hiking vacation, you will, of course, need very different things. Nevertheless, we have a few tips for you to pack more sustainable:

The first tip is actually one of the basics of living more sustainably: If you can buy secondhand, do it. In any case, it saves resources, and occasionally, you discover real treasures.

Must- and Nice-to-haves

Another must is a reusable bottle. Depending on where you are, you can get it refilled for free, fill it with tap water yourself, or get a big canister and refill it as you go.

If you tend to snack, you can prepare energy or other snacks prior to your vacation and take them with you in a washable can. This saves you packaging waste, and you know exactly what ingredients were used in the preparation.

What’s handy in your purse or backpack also looks good in your suitcase: a reusable bag saves you a lot of plastic waste and can generally make your life a little easier when traveling.

If you add a mesh bag to your bag, you’ll also be prepared when it comes to fruits and vegetables. This way you can not only transport your food safely and plastic-free, you can also rinse it if you don’t have a strainer at hand.

Tips for the bathroom

Let’s switch to the bathroom because there’s quite a bit of plastic and even space to save, too. Using solid shampoo and a bar of soap not only saves you the plastic of bottles, it also saves you valuable space in your luggage.

It’s a similar story with your choice of razor. If you switch to a safety razor instead of the expensive plastic razors, you’ll not only save plastic, the interchangeable blades are also much cheaper – and take up less space.

Did you know? Bamboo grows one meter a day. That makes it the fastest-growing plant in the world. It also makes bamboo toothbrushes a sustainable alternative to normal plastic toothbrushes. Although there is some debate, since the transport routes are quite long for bamboo, you can at least throw the toothbrushes in the organic waste.

The sustainable toothbrush also goes with a matching toothpaste. Especially practical for traveling: Toothpaste tablets. They are now available completely without plastic and are perfect to take with you.

Last but not least, if you’re going on vacation by the sea, make sure that your sunscreen is “reef safe” – i.e., that it doesn’t endanger the coral reefs. You should pay particular attention to the ingredient “octocrylene” – this is considered particularly harmful to corals.

Have fun packing!
