It is time to leave the loved ones to themselves and take a time out from family life. This is what we do every year. However, this year it should be a little different — more sustainable. As a Green Pearls® author having the wonderful task to write about resource low impact hotels with social commitment, it is obvious to experience hotels with environmental measures firsthand and visit one of the partners.

Our choice is the Hotel SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA with its ‘Green Days’ arrangement. In addition to the other packages, the ‘Green Days’ show the CO₂ emissions caused by the guest during their stay and support certified climate projects intended to compensate part of the calculated emissions.  We are so excited!

Off we go with a rental e-car, which can be conveniently charged at one of the hotel’s four e-charging stations in the hotel garage. When arriving, we can’t really enjoy the view from our two panoramic rooms with connecting doors because it’s already dawn. So, we concentrate on the ‘inside’. The room is very spacious! With booklet “Climate Change” in our room, we get more insights to the sustainable projects of the hotel. We also find a set of environmental bags (it took us a little while to identify these as potential trash collection bags), a recyclable laundry bag, and a touchpad that helps reduce paper consumption as a digital guest folder. Things for the weekend are quickly unpacked.

Wellness, feasting and discovery tour through the Black Forest

The ‘Green Days Arrangement’ also includes an entrance fee for the Black Forest treetop path or the Wildline suspension bridge in Bad Wildbad. But first we treat ourselves to a short sauna and a few laps through the indoor pool, before the 3-course dinner is expecting us. So, we don’t have to search for a restaurant in the surrounding area. The right decision because the food was delicious and made of least 90% certified organic quality. according to the hotel. My personal culinary highlight is the savoy cabbage on carrot mash with vegetable chips and chestnuts, a successful mix of salty, sweet, soft and crunchy.

On Saturday, after an extensive breakfast, we decided against wellness under pandemic conditions and put outdoor activity on the program. The sun makes this decision easy for us. Unfortunately, its power is not enough for the neighboring valley, so that our view from the tree top walk is somewhat clouded. But what the heck. We complete a 3-hour hike through the beautiful Black Forest and get a small idea of what else there is to discover in the area.

Very informative is the subsequent tour of the hotel. Guest can book the green house guidance with feedback discussion and computation of the individual additionally with the Green Days arrangement. We are taken on an exciting journey behind the scenes of the hotel to the garbage room, in which containers for 14 different materials are located (also labeled in English) or the cold storage houses. Here you get an idea of how many processes are involved in running hotel operations more resource-consciously.  Small things like the collection box with discarded items that employees can use for themselves, the massager in the canteen or the DVD rental are also part of the tour. Exciting details that once again make me very aware that social responsibility is also part of the show many processes are involved in running hotel operations more resource-consciously initiatives of the Green Pearls® partners. And also exciting to see that sustainability is almost 100% anchored in the value chain of the SCHWARZWALD PANORAMA. I could have rummaged around for a long time.

How good! After the treetop path and the green house tour, we still had enough energy to let the evening end on a fun note in our connecting rooms.

We used up the breakfast time on Sunday to the last minute. Fortunately, the number of buffet courses is not included in determining the carbon footprint.

Full, relaxed and cheerful, we set off again on our journey home.
