On land, at sea and in the air – water can be found in various forms. When you live in Germany like me, water in drinking water quality is always disposable. This is not obvious as water is not accessible to everyone on this planet. With SDG 6, the United Nations aims to facilitate access to clean water globally by 2030. With our behavior, we can contribute to a responsible handling of the essential element alike! It’s World Water Day, and we want to explain how water is used in different ways and how meaningful the valuable resource is!

Basis of life
The most important use of water probably is for hydration. Unfortunately, people tend to buy water in plastic bottles on the go. The benefits are obvious: the bottles are light and easily disposed of. However, the problem of “disposable plastic” is well-known. Specifically, the pollution of the oceans and the associated difficulties of marine life handling the plastic particles is problematic. The Zeavola Resort on Koh Phi Phi has therefore developed a sustainable alternative: Every year, the resort saves 95,000 plastic bottles through its own drinking water production! Incredible, isn’t it? In August 2018, the treatment plant was put into operation and has been supplying guests with pure water ever since 🙂
On top of that, Zeavola provides its guests eco-friendly aluminum bottles they can use and refill during their stay. The eco-resort is also listed in the app RefillMyBottle, so visitors on the Thai island can refill their reusable bottles at the resort at any time and no longer produce plastic waste from disposable bottles.

Washed clean
Washing the laundry or being in the bathroom also requires large amounts of water for cleaning – both at home and in hotels. That’s exactly why Creativhotel Luise installed astronaut showers using only 5 liters per shower instead of the usual 150 liters! What an incredibly good water management 🙂 (The special showers from Orbital Systems are also available for home use).
Relais del Maro and Arosea Life Balance Hotel also care about an economical use of the resource and use special tabs to regulate the water consumption. Water can also be saved washing the laundry, as the vegan hotel LA VIMEA shows: a water recovery mode saves around 40 % of water per washing cycle compared to normal machines. Of course, the most important “laundry tip” (for hotels and you at home): only wash when the machine is fully loaded.

Splish Splash, I was taking a bath
Who doesn’t enjoy a bath in refreshing water every now and then? Unfortunately, most swimming pools are cleaned with chemicals polluting the environment, and your skin at worst. Did you know about chemical-free alternatives? In the Bio-Agrivilla i pini you can bathe in a saltwater pool under the Tuscan sun for instance. The Tongsai Bay uses a similar method: Thanks to salt electrolysis, you can swim here eco- and skin-friendly in dreamlike infinity pools. Another eco-friendly alternative can be found in the spacious garden of Biohotel Sturm where an organic natural bathing pond filled with revitalized Grander water awaits you!

Perhaps we could demonstrate the importance of water and the positive or negative effects it can have depending on the handling. Best of all: We can make a contribution with our decisions every day 😉
