Like to relax sustainably with the whole family? The island of Juist is perfect for a family-friendly vacation.
Deceleration right from the start
Even the ferry ride to the island is a little adventure. Especially for small children, it’s a highlight. And besides, the deceleration we expect from our vacation starts right here. You can relax and enjoy the water with your kids, watch the seagulls and forget about the journey.
No cars nowhere near or far
But the deceleration doesn’t stop here because a big advantage of the beautiful North Sea Island is that there are no cars at all. Everything that cannot be done on foot or by bicycle is done by horses. The garbage is also collected by a carriage, something especially young kids find interesting. A car-free island means not only environmental protection and safety, but also a lot of adventure, especially for children. The size of the island is with about 16 km2 manageable, and you will see that everyone knows their way around rapidly. On the beach, the little ones easily make friends and often meet their new friends.
What to do when the weather is bad?
The island provides offers for all age groups. The Wiegand Wattwurm-Club offers a daily animation program for the 4- to 7-year-olds. All children from 7 to 11 years are in good hands in the Youngster-Club. The varied program offers lots of fun and sporting activities from Monday to Friday in summer. And the youngsters also have their club on Juist: The Friends Club is for everyone aged 12 and over. The program points for each age are always up-to-date on the website of the island.
Unfortunately, the weather at the sea is often unpredictable and there are also bad weather days. However, if it rains and is stormy, you have plenty alternative activities on Juist. For example, the children’s entertainment just described takes place indoors. Or you can use your TöwerCard (ferry ticket and guest fee) and get 1.5 hours free admission to the seawater adventure pool TöwerVital. The water slide, a paddling pool and whirlpool provide lots of fun. In the National Park House or the Coastal Museum, you get introduced to the life and nature of the island. And if it’s still raining in the afternoon, we recommend a visit to the island cinema. But also, a trip to the sea can be interesting, especially on a stormy day because you will experience the island in an entirely different way.
Babies welcome
By the way, Juist is not only child-friendly, but also baby-friendly. There are baby changing facilities in many places, two doctors for emergencies and babysitters if you want to spend an evening together. The fresh sea air is also good for the little ones and is especially recommended for children with sensitive skin. You can find more tips on vacationing with baby here.
