Are you longing for white sand and turquoise sea? Then we have the perfect hotel for you – the Gili Lankanfushi in the Maldives. Here you can expect a dream vacation in an environmentally conscious hotel. What the Gili does in relation to the environment and how the drinking water is obtained, you can find out in this blog.

Drinking water in the Maldives

Have you ever wondered where the drinking water in the hotels in the Maldives comes from? On many islands there are fountains. They use the water of the so-called freshwater lens, also called Ghyben-Herzberg lens, which is located above the salty groundwater of sea islands. The lens-shaped body of groundwater is formed by the precipitation and since the fresh water is lighter than the saltwater, it can be easily skimmed off. Collecting the rainwater is also a possibility. The Gili Lankanfushi uses a different method, they process the seawater.

From the seawater into the water bottle

The seawater is being desalinated in the ecological resort by reverse osmosis, filtered in 4 stages, and re-mineralized. Afterwards, you can enjoy it as drinking water in reusable glass bottles. Unfortunately, this process is very expensive and consumes an enormous amount of time and energy. Therefore, it is even more important that you use the water economically during your stay. The showerheads and toilet flushes are equipped with a water-saving system. Of course, you can also save water by taking shorter showers.

Keeping the ocean clean

Drinking water is obtained from saltwater, so it is especially important to ensure that the water in the ocean is clean. For the cleaning of the hotel rooms, as few harmful substances as possible are used. In the laundry, for example, Ecolab products are used. The hotel asks guests to avoid unnecessary washing and to use towels more than once, for example. Your bed linen will only be changed if you inform the housekeeping staff through a sign. And if you treat yourself in the Meera Spa, only 100% natural products are used.

Trash in paradise

Of course, it is also important that you do not leave a lot of garbage in the vacation paradise. That goes for a picnic in nature, but also especially for old batteries, empty spray cans from hairspray or deodorant, or electrical waste. It is best to take this garbage back home and recycle it correctly. If you act according to these rules, the paradise will stay a beautiful and clean sanctuary for a long time.

Sustainability on the Maldives – is that possible?

I have just been on the Maldives, more precisely at the resorts Reethi Beach, Reethi Faru and Gili Lankanfushi. The central topic of this trip was how to act sustainably on an island, which certainly presents a greater challenge than on the mainland.
