Are you also regularly thinking about not taking the car to go on vacation, but instead switching to an eco-friendly alternative like a bus, train, or bike? Often, however, the best intentions fail because the car-free alternatives are too complicated or the accommodation is not even accessible without your car. Today we present you six great travel destinations where you can leave your car at home and also spend the night in a sustainable way.
By train to Zermatt
Without a car in the mountains? Sure, that’s possible. Travel to Zermatt, which is completely car-free anyway. In Visp and Brig, there are direct connections to the modern narrow-gauge railroad of the Matterhorn-Gotthard-Bahn. From there, you can reach Zermatt in 90 minutes after a ride through the wild and romantic Visp Valley. You can stay at the CERVO Mountain Resort, which has several restaurants and the Mountain Ashram Spa — making it difficult for you to leave the hotel for hiking, biking or skiing. The family-run Hotel Bella Vista Zermatt is also an ideal starting point for exciting mountain tours and relaxing nature experiences. The hotel team will be happy to assist you with insider knowledge for outdoor activities and excursions.
Erlangen and Franconian Switzerland on foot or by bike
Or would you prefer a city? Cities are usually easy to reach by train or bus because of the better connections. We especially recommend a city trip to Erlangen, with its pretty historic center right next to the castle gardens. Our accommodation tip is the Creativhotel Luise, which is a pioneer in sustainability with its ‘renewable hotel room’ concept. The hotel is a certified “Bett+Bike” establishment and offers many amenities for cyclists, such as e-charging stations. Due to its central location, the hotel is also easy to reach by public transport. The best way to explore the surroundings is on foot or with the hotel bikes. For tips, take a look at the interactive map in the lobby.

Culture, Fashion & Art in Italy’s North
But of course, it can also be a bit bigger! The fashion and business metropolis of Milan is easy to reach from all directions and is also a frequent destination for many bus tour operators. So, no problem to arrive by bus or train. In the heart of the city, in the Brera district near La Scala, the Duomo and luxury boutiques, is also the Hotel Milano Scala. Milan’s first zero-emission hotel scores with a secluded panoramic rooftop terrace including its own vegetable garden, live classical music for the breakfast buffet, and an all-around eco-friendly concept.

South Tyrol: Take the cable car to the Rittner plateau
The car-free journey to ADLER Lodge RITTEN is exceptional. First you take the train to Bolzano, and then you continue with the historic Rittner cable car to Oberbozen on the Rittner high plateau. From here it is only a few minutes to the lodge, the janitor will be happy to take you directly from the cable car station to your accommodation by appointment. Free mountain bikes, e-bikes and a large network of hiking and biking trails ensure that you won’t miss your car on site.
