Candles create a cosy atmosphere, especially during the dark winter months. However, sustainable soy wax candles are often expensive, and conventional paraffin candles are not environmentally friendly at all. The good news is that you can easily make new candles from old ones—they’re creative, personalised and more sustainable than buying new ones.  BILD: Pixabay

Pouring a new candle – step by step

    1. Collect candle remnants:
Collect all wax residue, whether it is soy, beeswax or paraffin wax. Remove any old wick residue or dirt to keep the new wax clean.
    2. Melt the wax:
Place the collected wax remnants in an old tin can—like an empty tomato can—and put it in a water bath. Slowly heat the water until the wax melts. Stir carefully from time to time. (Caution: Never place wax directly on the stovetop!)
    3. Pouring a new candle:
While the wax is melting, prepare your candle jar or container. Secure a wick in the center. The easiest way to do this is to tie the wick to a wooden stick or pencil placed across the jar. (Wicks are available for purchase at craft stores, for example)
    4. Pour in wax:
Slowly pour the liquid wax into the container. For a pretty, colorful DIY candle, you can also layer several colors on top of each other! Then, let the candle harden completely. (If you are always using the same container, start with the lightest color.)

Sustainable and creative

With this simple method, you can transform waste into something new, avoid trash, save CO₂, and create a cozy atmosphere all at once. DIY candles also make great gifts or fun crafts for kids.
