Simply make your own deodorant

There are many reasons to make your own deodorant. First and foremost for me is the health aspect. Conventional deodorants contain aluminium salts that are suspected of increasing the risk of cancer. DIY-deodorants are also inexpensive, sustainable and long-lasting.

My favorite is a very simple deodorant cream that you can make yourself in a few steps. All you need are 3-4 simple ingredients, that you might already have at home:

  • 4 tablespoons organic coconut oil
  • 4 tablespoons baking soda (food grade)
  • 4 tablespoons cornstarch

With these three ingredients, your deodorant cream is scentless. With a few drops of essential oil you can add a scent. Great scents for homemade deodorants are citrus fruits, such as lemon or grapefruit. But also with lavender or rose scent, your deodorant gets a great smell. How much essential oil you want to use depends on how intense you like the smell.

This is how you do it:

  1. Put coconut oil in a pot and melt it over medium heat.
  2. Mix baking soda and starch well.
  3. Take the pot off the stove and turn it off.
  4. Mix baking soda and starch with coconut oil until a homogeneous mixture is obtained.
  5. If you like, add essential oils.
  6. Pour the mixture into a tin or small preserving jar.
  7. Allow to cool.

When the deodorant has cooled down, apply with fingers or a small spatula.

A quick tip for summer: store the deodorant in the refrigerator. 🙂

Have fun doing it yourself!
