The Blue Mind Theory: The Impact of Water on Our Mental Health

Whether it’s a beach vacation, a trip to a lake, or a hike alongside a river—water holds a powerful allure for us. BILD: OCEANO Health Spa Hotel, Teneriffa

During the summer or on vacation, hardly any of us need much encouragement to cool off with a dip in the water. Nor do we question the importance of staying hydrated. But did you know that recent research suggests that even simply seeing water or being near it can positively affect your mental health? And that this makes for a wonderful excuse for your next trip or vacation?

The Effects of water on your health

The human body is about 60 percent water. Therefore, it is not surprising that symptoms such as low mood and fatigue can appear with as little as 2% dehydration, or that staying properly hydrated leads to improved overall well-being.

Looking at water lifts your mood?

The other effects of water on mental health are even more intriguing. One notable example is the “Blue Mind Theory,” a concept originally developed by Wallace J. Nichols. According to this theory, spending time near water can positively affect mood and induce a peaceful, meditative state. As this study summarizes, blue spaces such as oceans, lakes, and rivers are associated with reduced stress symptoms and better mental health. This effect is further enhanced by engaging in physical activity in these environments. It doesn’t matter if the activity is stand-up paddleboarding, swimming, or other water sports.

Why does water have this effect on us?

The science and theory behind this have not yet been fully explored. Some theorize that it is related to how we perceive the color blue and our tendency to find natural sounds, such as the sound of waves, soothing. The combination of these factors, along with constant, gentle movement, triggers this state. And, aside from science, none of us can deny that lying on the beach and listening to the waves is one of life’s most relaxing experiences.

By the way: If we’ve inspired you to take a beach vacation, be sure to do so sustainably. You can find tips on how to do so in this article 😀
