Sometimes called “the little sister of Machu Picchu” the ruins of Choqueqirao in Peru are just as beautiful and great, but there are a lot less tourists visiting. This is due to the fact that it’s only reachable with a rather exhausting 3 to 4 day hike. You hike through a canyon and have to descend 1.500 meters in altitude first and to then hike every meter back up on the other side. On the way back it is the same again – just the other way round. Sounds exhausting, and to be honest it is ;-), but it’s worth it. It’s not only about the ruins which make it special hike, but also the amazing view throughout the hike! After all, when you arrive at the ruins in the afternoon of the second day, you might be tired and sweaty, but fascinated by the magical effect of Choqueqirao. By the way, you can either take part in a (private) guided tour with mules to carry your bags or just hike on your own. Either way you cannot miss the path and you’ll sleep in tents.
